What was the reason you were referred to the exercise referral scheme?
I was 8 months post op from hip surgery due to cancer and I had done quite well with my NHS community physiotherapist. I am able to mobilise short distances on crutches but this was being hampered by a lack of strength and stamina. My right leg was suffering from considerable muscle atrophy. My physiotherapist referred me to Archers as we discovered they have personal trainers specially trained in working with disabilities. One of my personal objectives was to be able to get to a gym and this opportunity was perfect for me. It is also fairly close to home and has excellent disabled access and parking.

How do you think that being here has helped you?
Archers Gym is virtually my only weekly outing. Due to my permanent disability I am pretty much house bound. Getting to the gym has helped tremendously with my mental well being and confidence as well as providing me with a personal exercise and strengthening regime. The staff and other patrons have been friendly and approachable and the facilities are state of the art. I look forward to going and it is usually the highlight of my week.

What do you do while you are here?
Always warm up first and then concentrate on arms and core (upper body) alternated with certain leg strengthening and movement exercises. All of my exercises are saved on my own electronic account, although Maria who takes me through my programme always seems to remember my machine settings etc.

Would you recommend it?
I would highly recommend both Archers Gym and their Exercise Referral scheme.
Discovering Archers Gym, Maria and the referral scheme has been a real life saver for me. Being stuck in the house with extremely limited mobility has been the cause of depression for me as well as fatigue and muscle wastage. The thought of leaving the house has caused me great anxiety. Since joining Archers my physical strength, stamina and confidence is improving. I know I will always be disabled and requiring crutches and wheelchairs to mobilise, but being at Archers will greatly help and support me in the future. Thank you.
