Why were you referred to the Exercise Referral Scheme?

In 2001 I had what was termed as a minor heart attack. It wasn't so minor for me but for the medical folk it was. They recommended to come down and see Juanita [Exercise Referral Coordinator in 2001] at Stevenage Lifestyles. I did, I went through the assessment and then started to come to do the first steps of Cardiac Rehab; Monday, Wednesday and Friday. When I felt strong enough I went into the gym to do an exercise routine which Juanita arranged for me.

How do you think coming to the gym and cardiac rehab classes have helped you?

It's absolutely amazing. The way I am, had I not done something like this then I would have sat at home. Coming to the gym restored my confidence because your confidence is wiped out. You never think you are going to have a heart attack but by coming here, it's proved I can actually do these initial light exercises - making me much more confident and much more happy.

I've met so many nice people and we've got a little gang of friend who formed in the gym. We go out and have meals together, the gym also arranges a Christmas do and seaside trip for us. It's been terrific help, morale-wise and obviously fitness-wise.

What would you say to somebody that wasn't sure about joining the Exercise Referral Scheme?

It's no good sitting on your backside at home; fretting, worrying and becoming unfit. The idea is to come out, get fit and socialise - it's worked wonders for me. I really enjoy it.

Would you recommend the Exercise Referral Scheme?

I certainly would. In fact, if it was anyone close to me I think I'd force them to come, get out the house, do things, meet people - I've had a really nice time.
